Nigeria's Leap Into Space Regulation: Tinubu Approves ₦20 Billion For NASRDA

Scope
Tinubu Approves ₦20 billion for NASRDA To Launch Space Regulation, Licensing

President Tinubu Paves the Way for NASRDA’s Space Regulation

Hey there, let me break this down for you. The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) is all set to kickstart its mission of regulating and licensing the space sector in Nigeria. How’s that possible, you ask? Well, President Bola Tinubu just approved a whopping ₦20 billion to get the ball rolling. This is a big step forward for NASRDA, which has been waiting for this moment since its inception in 1999.

Dr. Matthew Adepoju: The Man Behind the Move

Dr. Matthew Adepoju, the Director-General of NASRDA, spilled the beans in a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. He shared that the agency’s regulatory role, as stated in the NASDRA Act of 2010, has been on hold for far too long. This is why the upcoming NASDRA stakeholders’ workshop on space regulation, scheduled for April 8, is such a big deal. It’s the perfect platform to dive deep into the nitty-gritty of space regulation in Nigeria.

From Memo to Approval: The Journey Begins

When Adepoju stepped into his role, he wasted no time. He submitted a memo to President Tinubu, urging him to enforce NASRDA’s regulatory functions as outlined in Sections 6 and 9 of the agency’s founding laws. And guess what? The president didn’t hesitate. He approved the ₦20 billion take-off fund just a few months ago. Adepoju explained, “When I raised that memo stating that our space can no longer be unregulated, Mr. President graciously approved the take-off fund of ₦20 billion. This is to enable us to commence space regulation and spectrum management in Nigeria. You see, there are serious security concerns tied to the sector. If we don’t take control, it’s going to be misused, and that’s a risk we can’t afford.”

  • Now, here’s the catch: while the funds have been approved, they haven’t landed in NASRDA’s account yet. Adepoju clarified that the release of funds depends on availability. But don’t worry, the agency isn’t sitting idle. They’ve already set up a platform to kickstart their regulatory and licensing functions.

Understanding the Space Sector: Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream

Let’s break down the space sector into three key segments, as explained by Adepoju. First up, we’ve got the upstream, which focuses on deep space activities. Then there’s the midstream, covering space objects like satellites orbiting above us. Lastly, the downstream segment deals with ground stations and how people use space products and services in their everyday lives. Regulation in all these areas is crucial to ensure Nigerians don’t get short-changed. Licensing and clear guidelines are essential, along with monitoring Nigeria’s spectrum, a responsibility NASRDA has held since 2010.

Open for Business: Licensing for All

The licensing platform is now open to both public and private sector operators. Whether you’re a satellite image provider, a GIS operator, or involved in satellite-based telecommunications and broadcasting services, this is your chance to get on board. Adepoju emphasized the need for strict oversight to stop non-state actors from misusing geographical data for illicit purposes. He added, “This initiative will not only boost national security but also promote economic diversification and foster the development of local content. Plus, it’s expected to generate revenue from sectors like oil and gas, shipping, and telecommunications, all of which rely heavily on space products for their operations.”

So there you have it, folks. Nigeria is taking a giant leap into space regulation, and with President Tinubu’s support, NASRDA is ready to make history.
