Peter Obi: Building Alliances For Nigeria's Brighter Future

Peter Obi Teams Up with Atiku Abubakar for Nigeria's Progress
In a move aimed at fostering unity and progress in Nigeria, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, from the 2023 election, has revealed his collaboration with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other key political figures. Speaking during an interview on Arise News Prime Time, Obi emphasized that this partnership transcends mere political alliances. It's about coming together to address the challenges facing Nigeria and working towards a brighter future for every Nigerian.
Naija News reports that Obi highlighted the importance of such collaborations, which are focused on the welfare of the nation rather than the pursuit of political power. His statement underscores a commitment to a cause much larger than himself or any individual political agenda. Obi expressed, "Elections are won and lost by the votes of the people. All these discussions about alliances arise because we're not fully embracing democracy. Our focus is on working together for the country's benefit. That's why I'm not desperate to be President, but I am desperate to see Nigeria succeed."
Learning from Past Alliances: A Shift in Focus
Reflecting on previous political alliances, Obi lamented that many of them were driven by personal power struggles rather than a genuine desire to advance the nation's interests. "It was all these alliances that brought Nigeria to where we are today. People were blinded by the pursuit of power rather than focusing on what they could do to make the country work and be productive," he remarked. This sentiment highlights the need for a shift in mindset, where political collaborations prioritize national progress over individual gains.

Obi went on to question the purpose of attaining power if it isn't used to create meaningful change. "What are we going to use the power to do? If we don't address the root causes of our problems, we'll continue to stagnate as a nation," he asked. His vision is clear: alliances should be about driving positive change and improving the lives of Nigerians.
Obi's Vision for Nigeria: Education, Healthcare, and Economic Stability
Peter Obi has always been vocal about the need for transformative change in critical sectors such as education and healthcare. Reflecting on his presidential bid in 2023, he explained that his aim was to offer a fresh perspective for Nigeria. "I ran in 2023 because I wanted to do something different. By now, you would have seen significant improvements in education. I would have even visited schools. In the health sector, we have over 70% of primary healthcare facilities that are non-functional," he pointed out.
Obi also addressed the pressing economic challenges facing Nigerians today. "So many Nigerians don't know where their next meal will come from. People need to understand that I have the capability to turn things around," he added. His vision extends beyond rhetoric; it's about tangible solutions to the everyday struggles faced by Nigerians.
When discussing the devaluation of the naira, Obi emphasized the importance of economic productivity. "You talk about the devaluation of the naira; there's nothing inherently wrong with it. However, devaluation must be accompanied by increased productivity. Without productivity, the devaluation only exacerbates our economic woes," he explained.
High Interest Rates: A Barrier to Economic Growth
Obi expressed deep concern about the high-interest rates in Nigeria, which he believes hinder business growth and economic progress. "Today, nobody is producing anything because the interest rate is over 40%. How can anyone conduct business under such conditions? We need to implement the right policies, and we can achieve economic stability," he said. His stance reflects a commitment to fostering an environment where businesses can thrive, leading to job creation and economic prosperity.
Looking Ahead: A Reluctant Candidate for 2027
When asked about his plans for the 2027 presidential election, Obi showed reluctance to discuss his potential candidacy. Instead, he emphasized the importance of continuing to work with others to ensure the country's success. "I'm hesitant to talk about 2027. Yes, I'm part of the coalition, but any alignment must prioritize the future of the country. We must focus on investing in education, not just seeking power. We're talking about working together to save Nigeria. I'm not desperate to be President but to see Nigeria succeed," he stated.
