Momodu Slams Senate For Overlooking Nwosu's Legacy

Nwosu Did Everything He Should Do, I'm Embarrassed By The Senate - Momodu

Dele Momodu Calls Out Senate's Decision

Naija News brings you an exclusive update where Dele Momodu, the former presidential aspirant of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has taken a strong stance against the Senate for not honoring the legacy of Humphrey Nwosu. This issue has sparked a heated debate across the nation, with many questioning the Senate's rationale behind this decision.

On Thursday, the Senate rejected a motion aimed at immortalizing the late Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Humphrey Nwosu. The motion proposed renaming the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in his honor. This move has left many, including Dele Momodu, questioning the Senate's commitment to recognizing pivotal figures in Nigeria's democratic history.

Momodu's Perspective on Nwosu's Contribution

Speaking exclusively with News Central on Saturday, Momodu expressed his disappointment and embarrassment with the Senate's decision. He emphasized that the senators opposing the motion seem to overlook the fact that Moshood Abiola would not have been recognized as the winner of the historic June 12, 1993, election had it not been for Nwosu's bold actions in conducting and releasing the election results.

  • Momodu further highlighted that Nwosu executed his duties impeccably. He argued that the Senate today lacks the courage and integrity that Nwosu demonstrated under the oppressive military regime. In contrast, the current Senate seems to shy away from taking bold stands, often rubberstamping decisions without thorough scrutiny.

In his own words, Momodu stated, “You see, I am genuinely embarrassed by the actions of the present Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Many people, especially the younger generation, seem disconnected from our history. But the truth is undeniable—Professor Humphrey Nwosu performed his duties with distinction. It wasn’t his responsibility to annul or validate the election results. His task was to organize a fair and transparent election, and that's exactly what he did. The election he oversaw is still regarded as the most credible in Nigeria's history."

Momodu continued, “I can't help but wonder why these senators opposed honoring Nwosu. What more could he have done? The fact that we even talk about June 12 today is because an election took place, and Nwosu ensured it happened. Yet, I see a glaring lack of historical awareness in the Senate. Those criticizing Professor Nwosu fail to recognize the gravity of his actions. They wouldn't have dared to challenge the military regime as he did. Instead, they rubberstamp decisions in a civilian government, blindly following orders without question."

The Senate's Challenge to Historical Accountability

Momodu criticized the Senate for not upholding historical accountability. He pointed out that these senators are asking Nwosu to achieve what they themselves cannot. He questioned their integrity, stating, “Under a military regime, Nwosu stood firm and delivered on his responsibilities. Today, we have a Senate that rubberstamps anything the administration suggests. Yet, they have the audacity to criticize someone who did his job exceptionally well. It's a clear case of hypocrisy and a lack of appreciation for the sacrifices of those who paved the way for our democracy."

Momodu's impassioned plea for recognizing Nwosu’s legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring those who have contributed significantly to Nigeria's democratic journey. His words challenge the Senate and the nation to reflect on their values and the importance of preserving historical legacies.

This conversation is far from over, and it continues to spark debates across the nation. Stay tuned with Naija News for more updates on this unfolding story.
