Deadly Ambush Shakes Zamfara State

Listen up, folks. This is a story that hits hard. Armed bandits, who seem to know no bounds, have carried out a deadly ambush in Zamfara State. Six members of the Community Protection Guards (CPG), often known as Askarawa, and four local vigilantes lost their lives in this tragic incident. It happened on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025, in the Anka Local Government Area. This is no small matter. These brave men were returning from a successful joint operation with the Nigerian Army, where they managed to take down several bandits. But their journey home turned into a nightmare when they were ambushed by relentless bandits.

Details of the Attack

According to reports, these local security operatives were part of a team that had just completed a significant operation with the military forces in Anka. They were on their way back when they were ambushed near the Bagega area. This unexpected attack resulted in the tragic loss of ten lives. Governor Dauda Lawal confirmed the deaths in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, written in Hausa. He emphasized that the victims were part of a team that had just conducted a successful operation with military forces in Anka before being ambushed.

Among the deceased were six members of the Community Protection Guards (CPGs) and four local vigilantes, known as “Yan Sakai.” Governor Lawal also mentioned that three individuals remain unaccounted for, including two members of the CPG and one local vigilante. The governor stated, “I got information that gunmen ambushed some Zamfara State Community Protection Guards (CPG) in Anka Local Government. The incident occurred yesterday when security forces and the State Community Protection Guards (CPG) led by the Nigerian Army attacked the hideouts of the bandits and successfully neutralized several bandits and recovered their weapons.”

When the governor learned of the incident, he immediately took action. He directed that immediate medical assistance be provided to the injured and that families of those who lost their lives be given immediate relief materials. In his statement, Governor Lawal prayed for the souls of those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their communities. He also expressed his hope that God would bring an end to the security challenges facing Zamfara State, the North, and Nigeria as a whole.

“I prayed that God accept the souls of those who paid the Supreme sacrifice in order to protect their communities. May God comfort their families. I prayed God to end the security challenge in Zamfara State, North and Nigeria as a whole,” Governor Lawal stated.

The Broader Picture: Banditry in Zamfara and Beyond

This incident is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Zamfara is among the states in the North-West and North-Central regions that have been severely affected by banditry. The situation is dire, with countless lives lost and many individuals forced to flee their homes. Despite the best efforts of security forces, these attacks continue unabated. The resilience of these bandits is alarming, and the people of Zamfara are living in fear, unsure of what the future holds.

Naija News reports that the fight against banditry is far from over. It’s a battle that requires not just military intervention but also a comprehensive strategy that addresses the root causes of these issues. The people of Zamfara deserve peace, and it’s time for action, not just words. Let’s hope that the government and all stakeholders come together to find a lasting solution to this crisis.
