Senator Nwaebonyi Expresses Regret Over Verbal Spat with Oby Ezekwesili

It’s no secret that things can get heated in the political arena, but sometimes those moments stick with us long after they’ve happened. Recently, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, took the time to reflect on his heated exchange with former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili. This all went down during the Senate Ethics Committee hearing into allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, sparked by a petition from Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

The Tension Builds: A Request for Oaths

Naija News has reported that the spark that ignited the verbal fireworks came when Senator Nwaebonyi requested that Ezekwesili and her team be sworn in, in accordance with Senate rules. Ezekwesili and her team, however, weren’t having it—not until their concerns were heard and addressed. This standoff quickly escalated into a heated argument, with both parties trading sharp words and, unfortunately, name-calling.

Senator Nwaebonyi Reflects on His Words

In a candid interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, Senator Nwaebonyi admitted that his remarks during the exchange were out of line, especially considering that Ezekwesili is old enough to be his mother. He didn’t shy away from acknowledging that his words were inappropriate, but he also emphasized that respect is a two-way street. In his view, Ezekwesili crossed a line by addressing him in a way that he found disrespectful.

  • Despite this, Nwaebonyi was quick to commend Ezekwesili for publicly owning up to her part in the argument. He explained, “I regret my choice of words to her because she’s old enough to be my mother. But like I said, it is her action that brought up my reaction. When she told me to shut up, it was clear to me that she wasn’t showing maturity. She got to where she is by accident, but I give her credit for admitting her mistake publicly.”

Nwaebonyi went on to say, “She has no right to talk to me in that manner. I believe that respect is earned, not commanded. While I maintain my position that her behavior was unacceptable, I commend her for stepping forward and owning her part in the exchange.” It’s clear that both parties have taken responsibility for their actions, which is a crucial step toward moving forward.

    Lessons Learned: Moving Forward

It’s important to remember that in the world of politics, disagreements are bound to happen. What sets leaders apart is how they handle themselves during these moments. By reflecting on his actions and offering a sincere apology, Senator Nwaebonyi has shown a level of maturity that’s commendable. At the same time, Ezekwesili’s willingness to admit her mistake publicly demonstrates a level of accountability that’s equally important in leadership.

As we move forward, this incident serves as a reminder that even in the most heated moments, we can choose to handle ourselves with grace and respect. It’s a lesson that resonates far beyond the walls of the Senate chamber and into our everyday lives.
