Edo PDP Takes Aim At Governor Okpebholo: "Get Your Act Together"

‘Get Yourself Together For A Short Reign, Your Actions Are Laughable’ - Edo PDP Tells Gov Okpebholo

Edo PDP Slams Gov. Okpebholo Over Probing Previous Administration

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come out swinging against Governor Monday Okpebholo. The crux of their criticism? His determination to probe the previous administration led by Godwin Obaseki, especially concerning the Nigerian Observer Newspaper transformation project. This move, according to the PDP, highlights a lack of focus and understanding of what truly matters to the people of Edo State.

In a strongly worded statement delivered by Chris Osa Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, the opposition party urged Governor Okpebholo to "get his act together" during his short tenure at Osadebey Avenue. The message was clear: stop chasing shadows and start delivering real results for the people of Edo State.

Why the PDP Thinks Okpebholo's Claims Are Laughable

The PDP found it hard to swallow Okpebholo’s claim that he couldn’t access the Nigerian Observer Newspaper facility and found it devoid of staff when he visited. This, they argue, is nothing short of comical. How could the Chief Executive of Edo State, who essentially owns the Nigerian Observer, be locked out of his own property? It doesn’t add up, and it raises questions about his competence and leadership skills.

  • To clarify, the PDP reminded everyone that just four days after taking office, Governor Okpebholo issued a directive to sack all staff of the Nigerian Observer who were civil servants employed by the state government. This action was well-documented and widely reported in the media. Yet, here he is, months later, complaining about a lack of staff. It’s like he’s trying to have his cake and eat it too, and the PDP isn’t buying it.

A Call for Clarity and Accountability

The PDP further pointed out the absurdity in Governor Okpebholo's confusion over the whereabouts of sophisticated printing machines installed by the Obaseki administration. These machines were not only capable of printing newspapers but also textbooks, laminated materials, and flex banners. The irony? His own Commissioner for Information, Paul Ohonbamu, along with Fred Itua, General Manager, Sylvester Oboh, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication, had already conducted a tour of this equipment and officially received it from the concessionaire, Fountain Brooks, who operated the press under Obaseki's tenure.

For reference, the public is encouraged to check a Daily Post publication dated November 19, 2024, titled, “Edo: Gov Okpebholo sacks Observer Newspaper’s workers.” This document serves as proof of the governor’s earlier actions. Additionally, a report in The Sun Nigeria on February 07, 2025, titled, “EDSG takes over full control of Observer Printing Press,” provides further evidence of the transfer of the printing press equipment.

A short video capturing the handover ceremony, aired by TMC TV, is also available and attached to the PDP’s statement. This video clearly shows the governor’s team inspecting and taking custody of the equipment in question. So, the question remains: if they’ve already taken possession of the equipment, why is the governor still asking where it is?

Chaos at the Top: A Leadership Crisis?

The PDP’s statement revealed a troubling picture of chaos within the Edo State government leadership. It’s baffling that a commissioner, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the General Manager of the Nigerian Observer, and a Permanent Secretary could receive equipment on behalf of the government, yet the governor himself remains unaware of this fact. This disconnect suggests a serious lack of communication and coordination within the administration.

Equally puzzling is the governor’s expectation that employees he sacked on November 18, 2024, would still be present when he visited the establishment. It’s like he’s living in a parallel universe, disconnected from the reality of his own decisions. This inconsistency reinforces the PDP's claim that Okpebholo is out of his depth, and his government is failing across various sectors, including security, public order, revenue generation, the economy, education, and healthcare.

  • In conclusion, the PDP is calling on Governor Okpebholo to take responsibility and get his act together during his short tenure. The people of Edo State deserve better, and it’s time for him to rise to the occasion and deliver meaningful change. As they say, the proof is in the pudding, and the people are watching closely to see if he can deliver on his promises.
