EFCC Questions Olu Agunloye Over Controversial Mambilla Power Project

As the Clock Ticks Toward Nigeria's 2027 Presidential Election, the Political Chessboard Begins to Take Shape

With just two years to go until Nigeria's next presidential election, the political landscape is already bustling with activity. It's like a game of chess, and the players are strategizing their moves to secure their place in the race for Aso Rock, the heart of power in Abuja. Among the 19 officially recognized political parties, there's a flurry of activity as alliances are forged, restructured, and sometimes even dissolved. The stakes are high, and everyone's jockeying for position.

What's fascinating is how some political figures are exploring unique strategies, such as forming special purpose vehicles to enhance their chances of success. These are essentially tailored platforms designed to cater to specific goals or aspirations. It’s not just about aligning with a party; it’s about crafting a narrative that resonates with the Nigerian people and addressing their pressing concerns.

SDP: The Rising Star in Nigeria's Political Arena

Naija News has learned that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is quickly becoming a pivotal player in this political drama. The party is attracting significant attention, with no fewer than seven presidential hopefuls already signing on to its platform. This revelation came from the party's National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, during an engaging interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande—a popular socio-political show aired on Channels Television.

  • In a candid moment, Agunloye, a seasoned politician and former steel minister, shared that the number of presidential aspirants within the SDP could grow even further. "We have eight presidential aspirants; it could be 10. Seven of them are on our platform," he stated. While he didn’t disclose the names of these aspirants, Agunloye emphasized the importance of retaining them. "We can’t afford to lose any of the interested politicians to other parties," he remarked, highlighting the SDP's commitment to building a strong, cohesive team.

Peter Obi's Potential Move: Could He Join the SDP?

Another intriguing development involves Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP). Agunloye revealed that some of Obi's loyalists have reached out to the SDP with a proposal. They’re exploring the possibility of preparing the SDP's platform in the event that Obi decides to join forces with the party. "Obi’s people came to us to say if Obi comes, would you take him? Of course, we told them: ‘Yes’," Agunloye explained.

However, Agunloye also made it clear that while Obi has not officially declared his intentions, the SDP is laying the groundwork for any potential move. "Some of them are with us saying that they are preparing the ground but you have to join SDP. You cannot be in the Labour Party and be telling us Obi is coming without joining us, otherwise we can’t open our doors for you," he added.

Despite the speculation surrounding Obi's possible shift to the SDP, Agunloye maintains a pragmatic stance. "But Obi may have no plan to come or he may want to come. People do all of this but where we stand is that we must do well in our platform," he affirmed. The SDP is focused on strengthening its foundation, ensuring it's ready for whatever the future holds.

As the political scene in Nigeria continues to evolve, one thing is certain: the SDP is positioning itself as a formidable contender in the quest for the nation's top office. With its growing roster of presidential aspirants and the potential addition of influential figures like Peter Obi, the party is certainly one to watch in the run-up to the 2027 election.
