Benue Police Neutralize Bandit Gang In Buruku LGA

Police in Benue Report Elimination of 12 Bandits in Buruku
In a recent operation conducted by the Benue State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, a total of 12 notorious bandits have been neutralized in the Buruku Local Government Area of the state. The operation, which took place amidst rising criminal activities in the region, underscores the police’s commitment to restoring peace and order.
A Tragic Loss Amidst Victory
While the operation was a success, it came at a cost. According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Sewuese Anene, one of their officers, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, lost his life during the confrontation. This brings the total number of casualties from the encounter to 13, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement in their fight against crime.
Crackdown Ordered by Top Brass
SP Anene explained that the operation was a direct response to instructions from the Commissioner of Police, CP Steve Yabanet. On March 6, the commissioner directed tactical commanders and divisional police officers to intensify efforts against criminal activities in the state. This directive followed an alarming increase in banditry and other forms of criminal behavior in the area.

The Operation Zenda Joint Taskforce, tasked with carrying out the commissioner’s orders, launched a series of raids across the state. One such raid, on March 19, led to the intense gun battle that resulted in the elimination of the bandits.
The Battle Unfolds
During the operation, police operatives were ambushed by the bandits while en route to a suspected hideout in Agwabi, Tombo Ward, Buruku LGA. Despite the surprise attack, the police quickly regrouped and countered the ambush with superior firepower. The ensuing firefight lasted for several intense minutes, ultimately resulting in the neutralization of 12 bandits, while others managed to escape with injuries.
The bandits were later transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Their bodies were subsequently taken to the hospital mortuary. Among the items recovered from the scene were three AK-47 rifles, six rounds of live ammunition, camouflage uniforms, and assorted charms used by the criminals.
A Hero Falls
Unfortunately, the operation claimed the life of one of the police team members, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, who sustained a gunshot wound. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead by a doctor. His body was also taken to the morgue. The loss of Inspector Anyiatse is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect their communities.
Paying Tribute to the Fallen
In a statement, the Commissioner of Police extended his condolences to the family and friends of Inspector Anyiatse. He praised the bravery of all personnel involved in the operation, emphasizing the importance of their dedication and courage in the face of danger. “Inspector Anyiatse’s sacrifice will not be forgotten,” said the commissioner, adding a prayer for peace for the officer’s soul.
Further Successes in the Fight Against Crime
Beyond the Buruku operation, police efforts in other parts of the state have also yielded positive results. In Daudu and Makurdi, operations conducted by different divisions led to the seizure of seven homemade pistols. Additionally, five suspected robbers and 32 individuals believed to be involved in cult activities were apprehended. These successes demonstrate the police’s ongoing commitment to tackling crime from all angles and ensuring the safety of Benue State residents.
