PDP Drama: Showunmi Clears The Air On Party's National Secretary

PDP Leadership Clash: Who Really Holds the Reins?
Let me tell you something, folks. Politics in Nigeria is always a wild ride, and the latest twist in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no exception. Former gubernatorial hopeful in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has come out swinging with a bold statement: Samuel Anyanwu is the rightful national secretary of the party. Not Sunday Ude-Okoye, who was backed by the PDP's National Working Committee (NWC).
Naija News is reporting that Showunmi made this declaration after the Supreme Court's ruling. He insists the judgment clearly favored Anyanwu, not Ude-Okoye. Now, this isn't just a small disagreement; it's a full-blown clash within the party ranks.
Showunmi Takes on Ologunagba: A Battle of Words
In a fiery interview with Arise News, Showunmi took direct aim at PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, who publicly recognized Ude-Okoye as the national secretary. Showunmi didn’t hold back, stating that Ologunagba’s statement doesn’t reflect the stance of the NWC, the Governor’s Forum, or even the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

Here's what Showunmi had to say: "I was right there in the courtroom, watching every word of that judgment unfold. I wasn’t just waiting for the verdict—I was paying attention to how the court laid it out. Now, we haven’t even received the official certified copy of the judgment yet. The NWC hasn’t convened to deliberate on it. Our national legal advisor doesn’t even have the judgment in hand. So, how can one member of the NWC—no matter how high their rank—just step up and impose their personal interpretation on something we haven’t even fully analyzed yet?"
"So, here's what I’m asking the media to do: for now, take whatever Ologunagba is saying with a grain of salt. I’m not disputing his role as publicity secretary. What I’m saying is that no political party would ever allow one officer, especially a publicity secretary, to speak for the entire BOT, the Governor’s Forum, and the NWC without them first meeting and making an official decision. A publicity secretary is like the party's megaphone—but only after the party has discussed and agreed on what to say."
The Court's Verdict: A Key Turning Point
Now, let’s break down the court’s decision. The Supreme Court ruled on several matters, but one thing stood out: it sided with Anyanwu’s case. Section 47, paragraph 5 of our Constitution gives any party official the right to resign from their position by providing 30 days’ notice. This was the same provision that allowed Anyanwu to run for governor in Imo State. Those who approved his candidacy were fully aware of this rule. So, why would they now try to strip him of the privileges they once granted?
"The court said something important: it’s your internal affairs. But in its lead judgment, it sided with Anyanwu. The court didn’t mince words. And here’s the kicker: by the Supreme Court’s decision, Anyanwu is the national secretary of the party. If the NWC wants to revisit the judgment and decide otherwise, that’s their prerogative. But until they do, this is where we stand," Showunmi emphasized.
"Look, for the sake of the party’s integrity, it’s crucial that we respect the process. It’s wrong—flat-out wrong—for one member of the NWC to jump the gun and make a unilateral decision without consulting the rest. Even if they believe their stance is right, timing matters. You can do the right thing in the wrong way. And in this case, it’s not just wrong—it’s legally and politically incorrect. This kind of behavior undermines the party’s credibility and sets a dangerous precedent."
So, there you have it. The PDP is in the middle of a leadership tug-of-war, and it’s anyone’s guess how this will play out. One thing’s for sure, though: the party better figure it out soon if they want to stay united and strong moving forward. Politics is tough, but fairness and transparency should always be at the forefront.
