Big News: NYSC Members Start Receiving ₦77,000 Monthly Allowance

Hey there, friends! It’s finally happening! The Nigerian government has officially started disbursing the much-awaited ₦77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. After months of uncertainty and frustration, the funds are finally hitting their accounts. According to reports from SaharaReporters, corps members have already started receiving credit alerts reflecting the new stipend. This is a huge relief for everyone involved, and it marks the end of a long and challenging wait.

What Took So Long?

Now, you might be wondering, why did it take so long? Well, the story goes back to the government’s initial announcement of the increased stipend. At the time, the move was celebrated as a significant step toward supporting young Nigerians during their national service year. However, the actual disbursement hit several roadblocks. The government cited budgetary constraints and bureaucratic delays as the main reasons for the holdup. Many corps members grew frustrated, feeling like their contributions were being undervalued.

Minister Ayodele Olawande Steps In

Just last week, Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, spoke to Channels TV and addressed the concerns of corps members. He admitted that the process was complex but assured Nigerians that the backlog of payments would be cleared by the end of March. In his Monday interview, Olawande explained the challenges in detail, saying, “I’ve explained this many times. Some people think I’m always talking about the process, but it really is a process. When the president made the announcement, it wasn’t in the budget. Certain agencies and parastatals needed to have their salaries included in the budget before anything could move forward.”

  • The Minister went on to clarify that while President Bola Tinubu had approved the allowance months ago, the funds couldn’t be disbursed without proper budgetary allocations. “Anyone can approve anything, but you need a budgetary allocation to make it happen. Now that the process is complete, it’s been approved and signed. Corps members can start receiving their payments,” Olawande added.

    Skepticism Among Corps Members

Despite the Minister’s assurances, many corps members remained skeptical. After all, they’d been through months of broken promises and delays. One of the biggest concerns was about outgoing corps members—those who had served under the old stipend but were now eligible for the new allowance. Would they be left out? Would their backlogs be paid? These questions weighed heavily on their minds.

In response to these concerns, Olawande reassured everyone, saying, “When they asked the new DG about outgoing corps members, he confirmed that their backlogs would be addressed. We have your account details, and we’ll ensure the payments go through. It might not be music to everyone’s ears, but I can confirm that the payments will happen by the end of this month.”

A Step Forward for Nigerian Youth

So, there you have it! The disbursement of the new NYSC allowance is finally underway, and it’s a significant step forward for Nigerian youth. This increase in stipend not only acknowledges the hard work and dedication of corps members but also highlights the government’s commitment to supporting young people during their service year. While the journey wasn’t without its challenges, the fact that the funds are now being distributed is a win for everyone involved. Here’s hoping this marks the beginning of smoother processes in the future!
