What's the Deal with Big Meech's Net Worth?

Let me tell you about Big Meech, a name that became synonymous with the drug trade in the late 20th century. This American convicted drug dealer, whose real name is Demetrius Flenory, once commanded a net worth of $100 million. Today, his net worth is estimated at $500,000. Big Meech co-founded the notorious Black Mafia Family (BMF), a criminal organization that operated during the 1990s and early 2000s. At its peak, BMF was generating an astonishing $270 million in illegal profits and employed roughly 500 people. Back in high school, Meech and his brother, Terry Lee Flenory—better known as "Southwest T"—started their criminal empire by selling cocaine in Detroit. By the late 1980s, they had expanded their reach, establishing hubs in Atlanta, Georgia, and Los Angeles, California. Big Meech managed operations in Atlanta, while Southwest T handled the Los Angeles branch. At their height, the brothers were reportedly moving 2,500 kilos of cocaine monthly in Atlanta alone.

In 2000, the brothers attempted to legitimize their operations by launching BMF Entertainment. This venture saw them work with a variety of artists, including the now-famous Young Jeezy. Other BMF artists included Bleu DaVinci, Calico Jonez, Nu Money, Baby D, Fee Money, and D-Boi. However, their efforts to go straight were cut short when the Drug Enforcement Administration arrested them in 2005. Both men pleaded guilty to money laundering and drug trafficking charges, resulting in 30-year federal prison sentences. Big Meech was finally released on October 17, 2024, after serving nearly two decades behind bars.

The Rise of the Black Mafia Family

From Humble Beginnings to Infamy

Demetrius Flenory was born on June 21, 1968, in Detroit, Michigan, into a challenging environment. Growing up in a low-income neighborhood, he dropped out of high school and quickly turned to dealing drugs as a means of survival. Together with his younger brother Terry, who would later become his business partner, they began small-time operations that eventually grew into something much bigger.

  • By the early 1990s, Big Meech and his brother had relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where they founded the Black Mafia Family. BMF quickly became one of the most powerful drug cartels in the United States, specializing in distributing cocaine and other illegal substances across the country. Under Big Meech's leadership, BMF gained a reputation for its extravagant lifestyle, characterized by flashy cars, expensive jewelry, and high-profile celebrity connections. However, this lifestyle also came with a darker side—BMF members were known for their violent tendencies, and rivals feared crossing them.

It wasn't long before law enforcement caught wind of BMF's activities. In 2005, Big Meech and his brother Terry were indicted on drug trafficking charges, marking one of the largest cases in U.S. history. The investigation involved over 150 individuals and uncovered more than $270 million in drug proceeds.

    Arrest and Imprisonment

    A Fall from Grace

In 2005, Big Meech's world came crashing down when he was arrested in Los Angeles. He faced multiple charges, including running a continuing criminal enterprise, money laundering, and conspiracy to distribute drugs. After being extradited to Detroit, he was held without bail for three years before receiving a 30-year federal prison sentence.

During the investigation, authorities seized $21 million worth of assets, including cash, jewelry, over 30 luxury cars, and 13 homes located in Detroit, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Despite being behind bars, Big Meech continued to maintain a high profile. He lived a lavish lifestyle even in prison, earning a large following on social media platforms. While incarcerated, he worked on writing his autobiography and was rumored to be involved in a movie project based on his life.

In 2020, as part of a federal prison reform initiative, Big Meech's sentence was reduced to 360 months, or 30 years. His brother, Terry Flenory, was released earlier that year as part of an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. In June 2021, a federal judge granted Meech a three-year sentence reduction for good behavior, setting his release date for 2028. However, in March 2024, it was announced that Meech would be released in 2025. He was serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, Oregon. Ultimately, Big Meech was released on October 17, 2024, after nearly 20 years in prison.
