Uromi Incident: A Traveler Stabbed a Vigilante While Searching Their Vehicle - Gen. Esekhaigbe's Take

General Esekhaigbe Weighs In on the Uromi Incident

Listen up, folks: Major-General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd) is shedding some light on the tragic Uromi incident, where 16 individuals were killed. According to him, the actions of those involved were partly responsible for the reaction of the vigilante group. This is not to justify what happened, but to provide a more balanced perspective on the events that unfolded.

As reported by Naija News, the incident took place in Uromi, Edo State, involving a group of individuals traveling north. But here's the thing: there's more to the story than what's been shared so far. General Esekhaigbe, speaking with Arise News, revealed that the vigilantes had credible local intelligence suggesting that the group was carrying weapons in their vehicle. This intel sparked the vigilantes' decision to search the vehicle.

What Really Happened in Uromi?

Now, here's where things get intense. When the vigilantes attempted to search the vehicle, one of the travelers reportedly stabbed a vigilante with a knife. That act, as you can imagine, led to a chaotic and violent situation. General Esekhaigbe emphasized that this doesn't excuse the vigilantes' actions, but it does add context to the events.

  • “Let me be clear: the situation in Uromi wasn't one-sided. When these individuals were stopped, the vigilantes intended to search the vehicle because they had reliable information that weapons were being transported,” he explained. “During the struggle, one of the travelers stabbed a vigilante, escalating the situation. While this doesn't justify the deaths, it's crucial to understand the sequence of events. Taking another person’s life unjustly is not part of our culture or values in this region.”

    Preventing Future Conflicts

General Esekhaigbe also stressed the importance of educating cattle rearers about legitimate business practices and avoiding suspicious or underground activities. He believes that community leaders and traditional rulers must play a pivotal role in setting clear rules and regulations for herders operating in their areas.

“We need to sensitize these individuals to understand that they're coming to conduct legitimate business, not engage in secretive or illegal activities. Knowing your environment is key. If people claim they want to work with you, have you verified their identities? Are they genuinely here for cattle rearing, or are they hiding behind that guise to cause chaos?” he questioned.

Furthermore, he emphasized the responsibility of community leaders to ensure that anyone allowed to graze cattle in their areas is fully aware of the local laws and regulations. “Community leaders must take their roles seriously. If herders pay homage or seek permission to graze cattle, they must be informed about the laws governing the area. Additionally, law enforcement agencies, like the police, must be proactive in addressing these issues before they escalate,” he concluded.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of communication, transparency, and accountability in preventing future conflicts. Let's hope these lessons are heeded to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
