Where's The Governor? Military Trucks Roll Into Rivers Government House Amid State Of Emergency

Scope

Tuesday Night Chaos: Military Presence Surrounding Rivers Government House

As the clock ticked into the evening hours on Tuesday, uncertainty loomed over the exact location of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Meanwhile, a significant military presence was observed around the Rivers Government House in Port Harcourt. Military trucks were rolling in, creating an atmosphere of tension and speculation in the air. This marked the beginning of the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu.

These military trucks weren’t just parked randomly; they were strategically stationed both inside and outside the Government House. It was a sight that sent a clear message: the situation was serious, and the government was taking no chances. This deployment was the first response to the state of emergency, a decision made in response to escalating threats and attacks targeting oil infrastructure in Rivers State.

Why the Emergency Declaration? A Closer Look at the Threats

The state of emergency wasn’t declared lightly. It came on the heels of increasing attacks on oil installations in Rivers State, coupled with ominous warnings from militant groups. These groups had explicitly threatened to blow up pipelines if the Rivers House of Assembly went ahead with plans to impeach Governor Fubara for alleged misconduct. It was a high-stakes game of brinkmanship that quickly spiraled into violence.

The situation escalated rapidly, prompting a decisive military response. In an effort to restore order and prevent further chaos, President Tinubu suspended Governor Fubara and the lawmakers for six months. To ensure stability, an administrator was appointed to oversee the state during this turbulent period.

Patrolling the Streets: Military Trucks and Armored Vehicles in Action

Following the declaration of the state of emergency, approximately ten military trucks were seen patrolling the roads leading to the Government House. Armored vehicles were also positioned at key locations along the route, adding to the imposing presence. The main road from the popular UTC junction to the Government House was eerily deserted. Residents, sensing the tension, hurried back to the safety of their homes, determined not to be caught in any potential crossfire.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed seeing multiple military trucks and armored tanks stationed along the road. “The road leading to Government House from Isaac Boro Park to UTC is deserted,” the source told Daily Trust. “Residents are trying to get back to their homes as no one wants to be caught in a crossfire.” It was a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and the urgency with which the military was responding.

    Uncertainty Surrounding Governor Fubara's Movements

As the hours passed, it remained unclear whether Governor Fubara had vacated the Government House. Speculation was rife, but solid information was scarce. However, sources within the Government House hinted that the governor might have anticipated the state of emergency. Reports suggested that Fubara had spent the day in meetings with members of the now-suspended state Executive Council, possibly preparing for the impending storm.

A former commissioner, briefly speaking to Daily Trust by phone, mentioned being in a meeting with the governor. He promised to call back later but failed to do so by press time. It was yet another piece of the puzzle that remained unsolved, leaving questions about the governor’s next move hanging in the air.
