Debunking the Rumors: NJC Speaks Out on Nnamdi Kanu's Case

Let’s get one thing straight—there’s been a lot of noise about Nnamdi Kanu’s legal situation, and the National Judicial Council (NJC) wants to set the record straight. In a bold move, they issued a statement on Thursday, denying any claims that the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, had given the green light for Kanu’s immediate release or repatriation to Kenya. These rumors, according to the NJC, are nothing but fabrications spun by the media.

In their official statement, signed by Kemi Ogedengbe, the NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, the council urges the public to ignore these false narratives. The message is clear: the CJN has no involvement in Kanu’s case. They emphasized that no court proceedings, decisions, or judgments have been made where such statements were attributed to the CJN. Let’s break it down: the CJN didn’t preside over any of Kanu’s cases at the Supreme Court, nor did she make any pronouncements regarding his situation.

Furthermore, the NJC categorically denies that the CJN ever sent a formal letter to the Kenyan government or the Kenyan High Commission apologizing for Kanu’s arrest and trial. This is all about clearing the air and ensuring transparency in this high-profile legal battle.

Here’s the latest chapter in the ongoing saga: Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing a seven-count treasonable felony charge brought by the federal government, is set to make an appearance in the Federal High Court in Abuja this Friday, March 21, 2025. This is a significant moment in the legal proceedings, as Kanu will be presenting a new plea before Justice James Omotosho, the newly assigned judge to the case.

This reassignment came after the previous judge, Justice Binta Nyako, stepped down due to Kanu’s allegations of bias. It’s worth noting that Alloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s legal representative, praised the CJN for her swift action in reassigning the case, despite initial resistance from the Chief Judge of the High Court, Justice John Tsoho.

A Journey Through Legal Battles: Kanu's Rollercoaster Ride

Let’s take a moment to recap the journey that brought us here. Kanu was first apprehended in Lagos on October 14, 2015, after returning from the United Kingdom. Two years later, on April 25, 2017, Justice Nyako granted him bail on health grounds. After spending nearly 18 months in detention, Kanu was finally released from Kuje prison on April 28, 2017, following the fulfillment of bail conditions.

However, the story took a dramatic turn when Kanu fled the country after a military operation at his residence in Afara Ukwu Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State. This operation resulted in the deaths of several of his supporters. On June 19, 2021, Kanu was arrested in Kenya and extradited back to Nigeria by security forces on June 27, 2021. Since then, he has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

On April 8, 2022, the trial court dismissed eight of the original 15 charges against him, concluding that those allegations lacked merit. But the twists didn’t stop there. On October 13, 2022, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal ordered Kanu’s immediate release from detention and annulled the charges against him.

Unhappy with this ruling, the Federal Government took the case to the Supreme Court, requesting a suspension of the appellate court’s judgment while the appeal was being considered. The Supreme Court delivered its verdict on December 15, 2023, overturning the appellate court’s decision. This move allowed the Federal Government to continue prosecuting Kanu on the remaining seven counts.
