Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas Calls for Traditional Rulers to Step Up

It’s not every day you see a retired vice admiral stepping into the role of a state administrator, but Ibok-Ete Ibas is no ordinary man. Recently, during an important gathering at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State addressed traditional rulers with a heartfelt plea. He emphasized the critical role these leaders play in maintaining peace and fostering stability in the region. It’s clear that Ibas isn’t just stepping into the role—he’s diving in headfirst with a mission to turn things around.

A Passion for the Niger Delta

As Ibas stood before the traditional rulers, his voice carried the weight of a man who has seen the Niger Delta through its highs and lows. Speaking passionately, he expressed his deep affection for the region and its vital role in Nigeria’s growth. He reminded everyone that Rivers State isn’t just a piece of land; it’s a heartbeat of the nation. His message was clear: the time has come for unity and action.

A Former Naval Chief's Commitment to Peace

Ibas, whose background as a retired vice admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff speaks volumes about his dedication to service, didn’t mince words. He described the current instability in Rivers State as a painful reality, one that he’s determined to change. “As a former naval chief, my duty was to protect lives, and I remain committed to restoring peace in Rivers State,” he declared. His administration’s focus is crystal clear: restoring pride and stability to the state, ensuring that Rivers moves forward, not backward.

With a firm tone, Ibas laid out his vision for the state. “I am here with a clear mandate—to restore peace and ensure that Rivers State moves forward,” he stated. He highlighted the dangers of allowing personal interests to overshadow the collective good of the people. “A society without order is a society without progress,” he emphasized, urging traditional rulers to act as bridges between the government and the people. Their role, he argued, is pivotal in de-escalating tensions and fostering harmony within their communities.

A Call for Neutrality and Responsibility

Ibas went further, advising the traditional rulers to steer clear of political partisanship. Whether through their words, actions, or even body language, he urged them to remain neutral and focused on the greater good. Additionally, he cautioned against any association with cultism and vandalism. Instead, he encouraged them to take an active role in community policing and maintain open lines of communication with their subjects. “Security is the responsibility of all, not just the government,” he reminded them. His message was firm: there will be no tolerance for disorder or instability under his watch.

    Traditional Rulers Stand in Support

In response to Ibas’ appeal, HRM Chike Worlu-Wodo, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, voiced his support. He praised the appointment of Ibas as a positive step forward for the state, affirming that the traditional rulers were fully committed to maintaining peace in their domains. “As traditional rulers, our primary duty is to ensure peace in our kingdoms, clans, and communities,” Worlu-Wodo echoed. He likened Ibas’ role to that of a mediator, someone who can resolve conflicts and bring people together. The monarch expressed confidence in Ibas’ ability, stating, “We are not in doubt of your ability, which is why you were appointed.”

With these words, it’s clear that the traditional rulers are ready to join hands with Ibas in his mission to restore peace and progress to Rivers State. The state desperately needs stability, and with the combined efforts of its leaders, there’s hope for a brighter future.
