Big Move: Bringing Nigerians Home from Libya

Over 956 Nigerians were successfully evacuated from Libya in the first quarter of 2025. Who’s Coming Home?

Now, let’s break it down. In a statement released on Monday by NIDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, we got the full picture. Among the returnees, there were 683 women, 132 men, 87 children, and 54 infants. That’s a lot of people who are now back where they can be safe and supported. These individuals were brought back in six different trips spread out from January to March 2025.

Here’s how it went down: On January 28, the first group of 152 arrived. Then, on February 11, another 145 came home. Just a few days later, on February 19, 180 more Nigerians touched down. The following week, on February 25, 159 more were welcomed back. Finally, on March 4 and March 18, two more groups arrived—144 and 176, respectively.

Why Libya is Not the Answer

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa wants to make one thing crystal clear: Libya is not the way to go. She emphasized the ongoing dangers of trying to migrate through such a volatile region. “Because of the delicate political situation in Libya, we countlessly caution Nigerians to avoid Libya as a pathway to Europe. Not just Libya, but other irregular routes as well,” she stressed. This is a powerful reminder of just how dangerous these journeys can be.

She also pointed out that even some of those who were rescued from Libya keep trying to take these perilous routes to reach Europe.
