Coalition Concerns: Can the Opposition Unite Against President Tinubu?

Let me tell you, folks, politics in Nigeria is always a fascinating game of chess. Akin Osuntokun, a former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, recently shared some pretty candid thoughts on the new coalition being formed by opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Now, here's the kicker: Osuntokun isn’t exactly optimistic about their chances.

Osuntokun, who also served as the Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), expressed his doubts about the effectiveness of this coalition. While alliances are common in Nigerian politics, he believes this particular group might not have what it takes to take down the sitting president. Let’s dive deeper into why he thinks so.

Tinubu: The Master Strategist

Osuntokun described President Tinubu as a seasoned politician with a knack for strategy. He pointed out that Tinubu had already proven his mettle by winning an election against all odds, even when he wasn’t the incumbent. Now that Tinubu holds the reins of power, Osuntokun believes his advantage is only going to grow stronger. "If he could win an election when he was not President, you can imagine now when he is the President," Osuntokun told NAN.

  • With the power of incumbency on his side, Tinubu will undoubtedly have more resources and influence at his disposal. Osuntokun emphasized that Tinubu’s experience and political acumen make him a formidable opponent. "I would not bet against him," he added, highlighting the significant challenges the opposition faces.

Coalition Challenges: Can They Stay United?

Despite his skepticism, Osuntokun acknowledged that forming a coalition isn’t inherently a bad idea. In fact, he stressed the importance of unity for any political party hoping to challenge the ruling government. "For any political party, to effectively challenge the power at the center, it requires coming together to form a grand party, in order to stand a better chance of having their objective realized," he said.

However, Osuntokun warned that the coalition’s success hinges on its ability to stay united. One major hurdle, he noted, is the selection of a presidential candidate. If the coalition members can’t agree on this crucial decision, the alliance might crumble under the weight of internal divisions. "This is going to be a test of the durability and potency of the coalition," Osuntokun cautioned.

    Power Rotation: A Delicate Balance

Osuntokun also touched on the sensitive issue of power rotation between the North and South. He advised opposition leaders, particularly those from the North, to support a Southern candidate for the coalition’s success. If a Northern politician like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar were to secure the presidential ticket, it could disrupt the convention of power rotation that has been in place since 1999.

"He is going to violate that convention, and to that extent, he is going to lose support from the intelligentsia, and it will be a very hard sell," Osuntokun warned. This could alienate key allies and weaken the coalition’s chances of victory.

    Atiku’s Coalition: A New Hope?

According to Naija News, Atiku Abubakar made a bold announcement during a meeting of key opposition leaders in Abuja. He unveiled the formation of a coalition aimed at unseating President Tinubu in 2027. The event was attended by several high-profile opposition figures, including representatives of Peter Obi, the 2023 LP presidential candidate, and former government officials like Babachir Lawal and Nasir El-Rufai.
