Atiku Abubakar Opens Up About Nigeria's Political Landscape

Atiku Abubakar Speaks Out on the State of Emergency in Rivers State
Naija News brings you the latest update as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has voiced his concerns over the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Let’s break this down for you, folks. This declaration came last week, and it's tied to the ongoing political turmoil that has engulfed the South-South region. As someone who has been in the political arena for years, Atiku’s perspective carries significant weight.
Now, let’s rewind a bit. Tinubu made this announcement last Tuesday, aiming to restore order in the state. But Atiku, during an interview with the insightful television show "Untold Stories" hosted by Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, shared his thoughts. He expressed deep disappointment, saying he hasn’t seen the kind of governance improvements he had hoped for over the years.
When asked whether he believes democracy is fading in Nigeria, Atiku didn’t hold back. He said, “It’s incredibly dire. There’s no question about it. I feel deeply disappointed. The generation that came after me—many of them have served as governors and senators. Instead of seeing advancements in governance at the state level, I’m witnessing stagnation. It’s distressing to see where we are right now.”

A Coalition on the Horizon?
Atiku also touched on the possibility of forming a coalition with former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi. This potential alliance is generating quite a buzz, but Atiku was careful to clarify the situation. He reminisced about a similar coalition from 2014, where a group of leaders united behind a single candidate, leading to a successful presidential bid.
He went on to say, “We had a similar situation back in 2014. There were about four of us—maybe two or three—who all ran for president. One of us emerged, and we all rallied behind that person, ultimately securing victory. Now, more than ever in our political history, especially since the return of democracy, I believe Nigeria is in desperate need of experienced and credible leadership. There has to be a viable platform for this to happen, and we’re working towards that.”
In essence, Atiku is emphasizing the importance of collaboration and unity in navigating Nigeria’s current political challenges. He believes that with the right leadership, Nigeria can overcome its current difficulties and pave the way for a brighter future.
